House Of The Dragon: Who Is Sharako Lohar? (2024)

As House of the Dragon gears up to tell the rest of the story of the Dance of the Dragons from George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood, there will be plenty of new characters introduced. In the second season finale, you meet an admiral named Sharako Lohar, a character who probably came as a pleasant surprise to many as a comedic relief.

House of the Dragon takes a very unique approach to Sharako Lohar and truly one that seems like her character would join the likes of Bronn, Oberyn Martell, Olenna Tyrell, and Brienne of Tarth in terms of being iconic and memorable. Here's her story.

Major spoilers for plot points in the upcoming seasons of House of the Dragon and Fire & Blood are ahead.

Sharako Lohar In Fire & Blood, Explained

Following the bolstering of Queen Rhaenyra and the blacks with their new dragons and dragonseed riders of Vermithor, Silverwing, and Sheepstealer, the greens were making progress of their own, navally speaking.

Otto Hightower, Alicent's father and the former Hand to King Aegon II, brokers a deal with the Triarchy to get their help in ending the Sea Snake Corlys Velaryon's naval blockade to open shipping lanes during the Dance of the Dragons, promising them the Stepstones in return.

The fleet of the Three Daughters consists of 90 warships and commanding them is Grand Admiral Sharako Lohar of Lys, and that's all you're given for the character; just where he's from and that he's a male admiral, with no other interesting facts.

However, Lohar is important for two consequential story developments in Fire & Blood that will also undoubtedly be a major part of House of the Dragon – The Battle of the Gullet and the kidnapping of Rhaenyra's youngest son, Prince Viserys II.

The Battle Of The Gullet

The Battle of the Gullet is the next devastating conflict for the blacks and the greens after the Battle of Rook's Rest, and is considered "amongst the bloodiest sea battles in all of history."

Sharako Lohar divides his forces to come for the Velaryon fleet from both the north and the south sides of the Gullet, which also leads to the sacking of Driftmark and the subsequent destruction and peril in Spicetown and High Tide.

The fighting is warships versus warships until Jacaerys Velaryon, Hugh Hammer, Ulf the White, Addam of Hull, and Nettles on Sheepstealer ride in with their dragons to prove themselves in battle and give Lohar's fleet some "Dracarys."

Sharako Lohar managed to stay alive while both the Velaryon and Triarchy losses were heavy. In Fire & Blood, the aftermath is written as "many thousands died." As for his 90 ships, only 28 "survived to limp home."

One of the most shocking deaths in the Battle of the Gullet Lohar's ships were responsible for was the death of Jacaerys Velaryon and his dragon Vermax. The pair were taken down by grapples and crossbows reported to have come from a Myrish ship.

Prince Viserys II Targaryen

With her husband Daemon's fate in the balance, Lucerys Velaryon killed by Aemond and Vhagar, and Jace now tragically dead in the Battle of the Gullet, Rhaenyra suffers another tragedy with Viserys; her smallest child with Daemon.

Rhaenyra sends her two youngest sons, Aegon III and Viserys II, aboard the Gay Abandon to sail for safe refuge in Pentos as the Targaryen civil war continues to play out, but the ship is captured by Sharako Lohar as it sails right into the admiral's fleet.

Aegon III narrowly flew away on his dragon Stormcloud, which would later die from arrow wounds, and left his dragonless brother Viserys in the enemy's hands. Viserys disguised himself but was betrayed and taken into the custody of Sharako Lohar.

It's later revealed that Sharako Lohar also made it off with Viserys after the Battle of the Gullet, but due to tensions and conflicts within the Triarchy as a result of Lohar's losses, the admiral sells Viserys off to Lysene magister Bambarro Bazanne and then gets killed shortly after amid a power struggle.

It would eventually be Lord Corlys' son, Alyn Velaryon (also known by his later title Alyn Oakenfist), who returns young Viserys II, now well-educated and even wed, to King's Landing for a reunion with his brother, King Aegon III, straight out of 'We Were the Lucky Ones.'

Sharako Lohar In House Of The Dragon, Explained

Sharako Lohar is a very different character in the show than in the book, and it's a most welcome change because the creative liberties the showrunners take with expanding Lohar are already proving incredible.

In the book, Lohar doesn't even have a description or a backstory and is one of those characters who's mentioned briefly and doesn't receive much of a personality other than being a villainous scum of a pirate teaming with the greens and kidnapping Viserys to then get himself murdered.

Enter Sharako Lohar in the Season 2 finale of House of the Dragon, who's now a female admiral played by none other than Philosophy Tube YouTuber and trans actress Abigail Thorn, who you may also know as Nocturne from Baldur's Gate 3.

Abigail Thorn's charming portrayal breathes new life into Lohar and gives the character on the side of the greens a whole new vibe to root for, especially knowing she'll kidnap Viserys and her fleet will be responsible for the death of Jace and Vermax.

It's also worth noting that House of the Dragon's Sharako Lohar is an amalgamation of two characters into one, the other piece of Lohar's personality being adapted from the Triarchy character Racallio Ryndoon.

According to Fire & Blood, Ryndoon is a Tyroshi pirate and captain-general active in the War for the Stepstones with Daemon Targaryen and Lord Corlys Velaryon during King Viserys I's reign and is then directly tied to winning the Stepstones and declaring himself King of the Narrow Sea after Lohar's death and the ensuing Daughters' War.

Sharako Lohar is revealed to be polyamorous in the show, telling Tyland Lannister that she wishes him to give her multiple wives children. The admiral also enjoys mud wrestling and challenges Tyland to a competition to secure her support.

In Fire & Blood, Racallio is described as having "a dozen wives" and "insisted that Lord Alyn wrestle with him in a mud pit" and requested Alyn Velaryon to also give his wife sons, saying "I want sons as brave and strong as you."

Another major change made to Admiral Sharako is her bond with Tyland Lannister, who is the one forging the alliance with the Three Daughters of the Triarchy in House of the Dragon instead of Otto Hightower and seems to be taking Alyn's place in friendship.

One of the best moments in the finale and an excellent character choice for Sharako Lohar is when she continues to mess up Tyland Lannister's name, getting it wrong each time, and even naming him Tywin (the future Lord of Casterly Rock and father of Tyrion, Cersei, and Jaime Lannister).

You can see that even though Sharako Lohar is a woman in charge of a powerful fleet of 90 ships, she's viewed as an equal and very well respected by all those around her, and Tyland must even earn her trust to seal the deal of her joining Aegon's fight.

Abigail Thorn's Sharako Lohar will be a pivotal character in the episodes to come in Season 3 and far better developed than in Fire & Blood.
