PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE I THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 7. 2000 B-9 LOCAL NEWS Memories stream back to old warriors on a river cruise By Jonathan D. Silver Post-Gazette Staff Writer One by one yesterday, the old solshuffled, tottered and rolled down the gangway of the Gateway Clipper Fleet's Majestic toward Station Square, their ghosts of a lifetime ago trailing behind. Others sat alone with their thoughts. Bill Falvo, 83, relaxed outside in his wheelchair, taking in the cool air of a perfect day. Before the war, Falvo served in the Army at the Panama Canal.

Once, long ago, Falvo and his fellow warriors enjoyed the military benefit of being in the best condition of their lives. They were all sinewy muscle and crisp uniforms then, all "yes sir," "no sir" and urgent energy. For most, it's different these days. Potbellied, toothless, bald, in wheelchairs, on oxygen their age is showing; their bodies have finally betrayed them. It was hard to imagine them standing tall and taut, in formation, arms up in salutes.
And it was harder to imagine that one day the youthful volunteers from the Air National Guard who formed a receiving line for the debarking veterans would be old, too. WEISHAUP REGINA R.
